LSU safety Ty Benefield isn’t interested in the easy road. When speaking to reporters Tuesday ahead of Saturday’s SEC home opener against Texas A&M, the Boise State transfer explained what he means when he says he wants “the smoke”. He wants every part of the fight, the best competition, and the hard road, no matter who lines up across from him. And that mindset, he said, is exactly why he landed in Baton Rouge. In his words, the move meant “Going from Boise to the SEC, the best conference in the nation, the baby NFL.”

The message fits the moment. The Tigers are coming off a 32-24 loss to Ole Miss that dropped them to 0-1 in SEC play, and No. 10 LSU now hosts No. 23 Texas A&M. Benefield kept the focus tight, saying he isn’t thinking about the playoffs or future weeks, only the Aggies. When asked what fans should know about this team three weeks in, he said the answer will come on Saturday because actions speak louder than words.

Benefield also took responsibility after the loss in Oxford. He said he takes full responsibility as a leader, noting coaches can’t go out and play the game for them. His play backed up his words in the second half, when his blitz forced Trinidad Chambliss into a rushed throw that Ja’Keem Jackson intercepted, setting up an LSU touchdown. He finished that game with 5 tackles, a sack and a QB hurry.

The secondary will lean on him even more now with Dashawn Spears out. Benefield praised Jhase Thomas for filling in on short notice and communicating at a high level. Against a mobile quarterback like Marcel Reed, Benefield stressed keeping him in the pocket and staying disciplined in coverage.

Benefield arrived at LSU with a loaded resume. He started 33 games at Boise State, including 28 straight, and totaled 235 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups and 5 interceptions across 41 appearances. In 2025, he led the Broncos with 105 tackles, adding 8.5 tackles for loss and 2 interceptions en route to a first-team All-Mountain West. He was also the 2024 Mountain West Championship Game Defensive MVP and played on Boise’s 2024 College Football Playoff team. This summer, the AP named him a Preseason Second-Team All-American, and he passed on the NFL Draft with a chance to be a first round pick next year.
